A Message From Judge Brett J. Niemeier

Dear Parents of Middle School Students: The next few years are some of the most important years of your child's life. Your child will experience many new activites and be introduced to drugs and alcohol. The decisions they make now can have consequences which last a lifetime.

A recent stufy of over 3,000 students showed that 29% of local 8th graders drink alcohol at least once a month. 10% use drugs. These numbers increase to 44% and 20% respectively by their sophomore year in high school.

Unfortunately, I see youth in my Court every week who should have known better. To help prevent this from happening to your child, you should have open discussions with your child about the dangers of drugs and alcohol. Discuss their feelings. Ask what they hear and see around school. Keep a watchful eye out on your child. Are his or her grades slipping? Are they more argumentative? On many occasions this is not just because they are a teenager. Drugs and alcohol can change a person's desires and attitudes.

With your guidance your child can avoid being another statistic of drugs and alcohol. For your child's sake and for our community's sake, don't condone youths using drugs or alcohol.

Sincerely,

Brett J. Niemeier
