Bad Check Restitution Program
The Check Deception Program has been renamed the Vanderburgh County Prosecutor’s Office Bad Check Restitution Program. This program is designed to prosecute people who fail to make good on dishonored checks that they write. The program was modified in June of 2007 and is now run by American Corrective Counseling Service. This has resulted in a number of improvements: No tax dollars are required to operate this program; merchants receive 100% of the restitution recovered by the program; and participants are required to complete a special intervention class in addition to paying restitution. We see this program as a cooperative effort between the Prosecutor’s Office and local merchants to combat the problem of bad checks being passed to local businesses.
